The Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship is a prestigious program aimed at providing each Scholar the time and resources to complete the first draft of a full-length book. This initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by writers, particularly emerging ones, who often struggle to balance their writing endeavors with earning a living.
Scholars selected for this scholarship are expected to submit 10,000 new words to the Foundation at the end of each month, showcasing their progress throughout the scholarship period. Additionally, scholars are encouraged to give back to the literary community by donating 20% of their future earnings from the work created during the scholarship tenure, helping to support other promising writers.

Requirements:
To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must fulfill the following criteria:
- Submit an excerpt of their published work, written in English, ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 words. Clear evidence of publication and availability for sale must be provided.
- The submitted work will be evaluated based solely on its literary merit.
- The scholarship aims to support creative writing and does not cover academic or scientific research or works with specific interests like religious or political writings.
Scholarship Duration and Reward:
Scholars focusing on fiction will receive a grant of £18,000, paid in monthly installments over twelve months.
For non-fiction writers, the Foundation may offer a grant of up to £27,000, disbursed over a maximum of eighteen months, at its discretion.
Required Documents:
Applicants are required to prepare and submit the following documents:
- A Word document containing a published excerpt of 2,000 to 5,000 words, along with proof of publication and sale.
- A descriptive outline of the intended book, ranging from 400 to 1,000 words.
- A scan of an official document verifying African nationality of the applicant or both parents.
- A brief biographical sketch of 200 to 300 words.
- Information on how the applicant heard about the Morland Writing Scholarships.
