The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is an exclusive, last-dollar scholarship awarded to exceptional minority high school seniors from low-income households. Its primary aim is to assist these student leaders in reaching their full potential.
The Gates Scholarship aims to fund 300 students annually, totaling 3,000 students by 2018. This prestigious scholarship program, initiated in 2017 by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, strives to eliminate financial barriers for high-potential, low-income minority students, enabling them to excel in their studies and graduate successfully.
To be eligible for The Gates Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a high school senior.
- Belong to one or more of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American.
- Be Pell-eligible.
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
- Have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.
Additionally, for American Indian/Alaska Native applicants, proof of tribal enrollment will be required.
The scholarship covers the full cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid and the expected family contribution, as determined by the FAFSA or the college/university’s methodology.
An ideal candidate will have an outstanding academic record, demonstrated leadership ability, and exceptional personal success skills.
