Meet Joshua Alvarado, a remarkable young Californian senior at South Gate High School, whose journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Raised by his dedicated mother, Irene Rodriguez, after losing his father at a tender age, Joshua faced various challenges, especially with the financial burden of education.
Determined to lighten his mother’s load, Joshua applied for the Edison International College Scholarship. The surprising and tearful moment came on South Gate High School’s career day when Edison International, a utility company sponsoring Southern California kids to pursue higher education, awarded him a $50,000 college scholarship. His mother and siblings were present to witness this life-changing event, overwhelmed with joy and pride.
Reflecting on his family’s past struggles, Joshua acknowledged his mother’s tremendous efforts as the sole provider for him and his four siblings. He praised her resilience and unconditional support throughout their academic journeys, allowing them all to focus on their studies and personal growth.
With aspirations of becoming an Engineer, Joshua will embark on a new chapter at Stanford University in the United States. He plans to pursue Mechanical Engineering, with dreams of working at the prestigious National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the future.
