Overview

The Fulbright USA BioLAB Scholarship Program is a fully funded one-year research internship designed for Master’s and PhD students in life sciences, biophysics, and medical fields. The program provides a unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at some of the United States’ most prestigious institutions.

Participants can work on independent research projects at one of the following institutions:

  1. University of Virginia, Charlottesville
  2. University of Chicago, Chicago
  3. University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas
  4. Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Oklahoma City

Scholarship Benefits

The BioLAB program provides extensive support to participants, including:

  1. Generous Stipend: $28,000–$35,000 to cover living expenses.
  2. Medical Insurance: Comprehensive health coverage for the entire duration of the internship.
  3. Visa Assistance: Guidance and support for obtaining an F-1 or J-1 visa.
  4. Pre-Departure Orientation: Sessions led by Fulbright staff and alumni to prepare participants.
  5. Ongoing Support: Host institutions provide continuous guidance throughout the program.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Enrollment Status:
  • Enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Poland in relevant fields such as biology, pharmacy, biotechnology, or medicine.
  • Must have active student status during the internship.
  1. Academic Background:
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent, such as a Licencjat).
  • Maintain a high GPA (4.0 or higher is strongly recommended).
  1. English Proficiency:
  • English language proficiency at B2 level or above (though official test scores are not mandatory).
  1. Residency:
  • Applicants must hold a Polish undergraduate degree.

Application Process

Step 1: Prepare Application Documents

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Highlight laboratory research experience and accomplishments.
  • Academic Transcripts: Copies of transcripts from all degree programs.
  • Personal Statement: Write a compelling essay detailing research interests, goals, and reasons for applying.
  • Signed Consent: A signed consent form to participate in the program.
  • Project Preferences: List of preferred research projects and host institutions.

Step 2: Obtain Recommendation Letters

  • Secure two recommendation letters from academic referees.
  • Referees must submit letters directly to the Fulbright Commission.

Step 3: Submit the Application

  • Compile all required documents into a single PDF file named in the format LastName_FirstName.pdf.
  • Submit the application via the Fulbright Commission’s online portal by 3:00 PM Polish time on February 1, 2025.

Selection Process

Applicants are evaluated based on:

  1. Academic Performance: High grades and relevant coursework.
  2. Research Experience: Laboratory experience and technical skills.
  3. Motivation: Clarity and alignment of personal and academic goals with the program’s objectives.
  4. References: Strength of recommendation letters.
  5. Language Proficiency: Ability to communicate effectively in English.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview.


Program Timeline

  1. Application Deadline: February 1, 2025.
  2. Notification of Results: Spring 2025.
  3. Internship Start Date: Fall 2025.
